Codex
Want Codex to cut your videos? CapCut's official plugin builds an editable draft, but not in the U.S. yet
CapCut's official Codex plugin lets Codex generate visuals, assemble an editable video draft, and edit the timeline from chat, then hand off to the CapCut editor. It's available outside the U.S. only for now, and today's X demos look largely promotional.
What changed
CapCut has an official plugin that lets Codex drive CapCut. You describe a video, or upload clips, and Codex generates visuals, builds an editable draft, and can show the timeline in chat so you can ask for changes like shortening scenes, reordering clips, swapping music, or retiming captions. When you want hands-on control, you open the same project in the CapCut editor. It can also suggest CapCut templates and prepare caption and language versions. Today X was full of creators showing it turning an AI character into a finished marketing video.
Who is affected
Creators and marketers who use the ChatGPT desktop app outside the U.S. CapCut says the plugin is available outside the U.S. only for now, with a U.S. launch coming soon. CapCut describes it as built for the ChatGPT desktop experience on PC, not the browser, and says availability depends on app version, account, and region.
What to do now
- Check your region first. If you're in the U.S., authorization won't work yet, so don't spend time on setup.
- Install it from CapCut's page. CapCut gives you a prompt to paste into a ChatGPT desktop task, which has Codex fetch CapCut's install instructions, install the plugin, and ask you to authorize your CapCut account. Read what Codex is about to run before you approve each step.
- Once it's connected, name CapCut in your prompt and give it the creative direction up front: the story, audience, platform, aspect ratio, and length.
- Treat the first result as a rough cut. Ask for specific timeline changes in chat, then open CapCut to check timing, captions, and brand details before you export.
What is not confirmed
Much of today's X wave reads like a coordinated campaign; many posts carry the same CapCut hashtags and sales pitch, so treat those demos as marketing rather than independent tests. CapCut's page doesn't state pricing for generation or which ChatGPT plans are supported, and DotsFeed hasn't tested the plugin.
