ChatGPT's Intelligent UI is live: name the inputs you want to change to get a usable tool, and ask for fewer visuals if they get in the way
GPT-6 with Intelligent UI is rolling out in ChatGPT's Chat tab, so answers can include charts, diagrams, and interactive tools. You get the most out of it by asking for a tool and naming the inputs you want to adjust. If you'd rather have plain text, OpenAI says to tell ChatGPT to use fewer visuals.
What changed
OpenAI started rolling out GPT-6 with Intelligent UI in ChatGPT on October 7. Answers no longer have to be a block of text: ChatGPT can now mix text with diagrams, charts, maps, forms, buttons, and small interactive tools that you use right in the conversation. OpenAI's own examples include a dinner plan where you change the guest count, a bill splitter, and explainers where you change the inputs and watch the result move. OpenAI also says GPT-6 can start answering while it is still thinking, so there is less waiting.
In WIRED's hands-on before launch, asking for a custom tool to compare cabin layouts on four planes produced a seat map you could tap, and an apartment affordability question came back as a calculator with sliders.
Who is affected
Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users get it in the Chat tab starting October 7, powered by GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go users get it starting October 8, powered by GPT-6 Luna. The rollout is gradual, so it may not show up on every account right away. The models in Work and Codex are not part of this change.
What to do now
- Ask for a tool, not just an answer, and list the inputs you want to play with. For example: "Build a savings calculator where I can change the monthly deposit, interest rate, and number of years." Named inputs give ChatGPT something concrete to turn into controls.
- When you are learning something, ask ChatGPT to explore or show how it works. OpenAI's demo used "explore how an airplane wing generates lift." Then change the inputs and ask about what changed.
- Check the math before you rely on it. An interactive calculator is still model output, so confirm the formula and the numbers before using it for money, travel, or health decisions.
- If the visuals get in the way, tell ChatGPT to use fewer of them. That is how OpenAI product manager Aarush Selvan described dialing them back to WIRED.
What is not confirmed
- We found no documented settings switch that turns Intelligent UI off. The OpenAI Help Center's visual settings cover only appearance, contrast, accent color, and zoom.
- OpenAI has not said whether the interactive tools can be saved, shared, or exported outside the chat.
- OpenAI has not said whether Dots or the Work tab will get Intelligent UI.
