Maintain an open-source project? Codex for OSS grants now come at the Pro 200 tier, and applications are still open
OpenAI is upgrading every grant in the current Codex for Open Source round to the higher Pro 200 tier. Existing grantees should get it automatically, and maintainers can still apply.
What changed
On Oct 21, 2026, Charlie Marsh announced that OpenAI is upgrading all Codex for OSS grants to Pro 200, and @OpenAIDevs reposted it. When the program was renewed on Sept 15, the grants were $100 Pro plans. The current round still has 10,000 grants; they are now at the higher tier, and people who already received a grant should see the upgrade applied automatically.
Per OpenAI's program page, selected maintainers get six months of ChatGPT Pro with Codex, API credits for work like pull request review, maintainer automation, and release workflows, and case-by-case access to Codex Security.
Who is affected
Core maintainers of public GitHub repositories and people running widely used open-source projects, especially those who use Codex for triage, review, and releases. Current grantees are affected too, since their grant is being upgraded.
What to do now
- Already have a grant? Check your ChatGPT plan; the higher tier should appear without you doing anything.
- Don't have one yet? Apply at https://openai.com/form/codex-for-oss/ . Have ready: the email on your ChatGPT account, a public GitHub profile, a public repository URL, a short case for why the repo matters (stars, monthly downloads, or its role in the ecosystem, 500 characters max), your OpenAI organization ID, and how you'd use API credits.
- If your project doesn't neatly fit the criteria but matters to the ecosystem, OpenAI says to apply anyway and explain why. You can also nominate another maintainer.
- Codex Security access is limited to repositories you own or are authorized to administer; don't point it at code you don't control.
What is not confirmed
The post doesn't spell out how Pro 200 usage limits compare with the earlier $100 plan, whether the six-month duration changes, or when this round closes. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and approval isn't guaranteed.
