Did your Codex usage drain fast over the weekend? OpenAI says about 40,000 accounts got the wrong plan's limits and will get credits
Tibo (OpenAI) says about 40,000 accounts had usage counted against limits that didn't match their selected plan over the weekend. OpenAI says it has fixed the issue, is contacting affected users one by one, and will add credits to their accounts.
What changed
On Oct 20, 2026, Thibault Sottiaux (Tibo), who leads Codex at OpenAI, said reports of usage draining faster than expected over the weekend traced back to an inconsistency: about 40,000 accounts had usage applied under limits that did not match the plan they had actually selected. He said the issue has been corrected, OpenAI is reaching out to each affected user individually, and affected accounts will get credits added. He closed with an apology.
Who is affected
About 40,000 accounts, according to OpenAI. The post does not say which plans were mismatched, which Codex surfaces were involved, or the exact time window beyond "over the weekend" (Oct 17–18).
What to do now
- If your Codex allowance dropped unusually fast over the weekend, watch your email and in-app messages for OpenAI's outreach before opening a duplicate support ticket.
- Open your usage settings and confirm the plan shown is the plan you pay for.
- If you wrote down your numbers after the Oct 16 drop we covered earlier, keep them. They help if you don't hear back.
What is not confirmed
- How many credits each affected account gets, and when they land.
- Whether the Oct 16 allowance drop reported on GitHub is the same issue.
- There is no help-center article or status-page entry yet. This is based on a staff post on X.
