Texting your Dot isn't built in yet: Andrew Wilkinson bridged his to iMessage with Linq
OpenAI says texting a Dot is "coming soon." Andrew Wilkinson says he already reaches his Dot from iMessage through Linq, a third-party messaging API. He didn't share the setup, so treat it as a field report.
What changed
Andrew Wilkinson, co-founder of Tiny, posted on Oct 6 that he connected his ChatGPT Dot to iMessage using Linq. He says texting it feels like a dedicated texting assistant, except the Dot still has context on him, access to his computer, his knowledge graph, and all his plugins.
OpenAI's own Message your dot page lists ChatGPT, voice calls, Slack, and Microsoft Teams as the supported contact methods, and says texting is coming soon. So this is a third-party bridge, not an official channel.
Who is affected
Dot owners on Pro or Business Premium who want to reach their Dot from their phone's Messages app instead of the ChatGPT app or Slack. If you're on Enterprise, OpenAI's admin guide says phone messaging through iMessage, RCS, or WhatsApp is unavailable at launch, so check with your workspace admin before wiring anything up.
What to do now
- If Slack or Teams is close enough, use the built-in route: open your Dot's profile, select Add, and connect the contact method. It's supported and keeps the same memory.
- If you want iMessage today, Linq sells a Partner API for iMessage, RCS, and SMS, and publishes a plugin for Codex, Claude Code, and Cursor that can build the integration for you. Expect to provision a Linq number, set up a webhook for incoming messages, and relay them to your Dot and back.
- A lighter route one reply suggested: if your Mac is connected to your Dot, ask it to read and send iMessages through computer use on a schedule. That only works while your Mac is online with the ChatGPT app open.
- Either way, connecting a messaging channel doesn't grant app access on its own, and Linq's tools send real messages to real phones. Keep approvals on for anything that sends on your behalf.
What is not confirmed
Wilkinson didn't say how he wired Linq to his Dot (a webhook relay, a plugin, or computer use), what it costs, or how reliable replies are. The computer-use route comes from a single reply by William Geronco and hasn't been tested here. OpenAI hasn't given a date for native texting.
