Hit a ChatGPT limit mid-task? VS Code 1.141 can pick up your Codex chat with its history intact

Verified· Oct 10, 2026Published Oct 10, 2026

VS Code 1.141 lets you continue a Codex chat started in the ChatGPT app or Codex CLI in its Agents window on the same machine, with history intact, and switch back later. Only one app can send at a time.

What changed

VS Code 1.141, released October 7, can open a Codex chat you started in the ChatGPT app or the Codex CLI and continue it in the Agents window, with the conversation history kept. You can go back to ChatGPT or the CLI later and keep going in the same chat. New or updated chats show up within a few seconds without reloading VS Code.

Who is affected

Developers who move between the ChatGPT app, the Codex CLI, and VS Code on one machine, and anyone who runs out of ChatGPT usage partway through a task and wants to finish it on a GitHub Copilot model without starting over.

What to do now

  • Update to VS Code 1.141, enable Codex, and turn on the Created Externally filter so outside sessions appear in the sessions list.
  • To keep working after a ChatGPT usage limit, open the chat in VS Code and pick a Copilot model in the model picker.
  • Only one app can send to a chat at a time. If VS Code shows "This chat is open in another app," fully quit ChatGPT or exit the Codex CLI session, then select Retry; your draft and attachments stay in place.

What is not confirmed

The handoff only works on the same machine, per the release notes. We have not tested how it behaves with cloud Codex tasks or across accounts.
