Dots
Want your Dot to act the moment someone uses your Site? Send it MCP Events
Gabriel Chua showed a ChatGPT Site that fires an MCP event when someone submits a request, and his Dot picks it up and does the work. OpenAI's MCP Events docs confirm dots can subscribe to plugin MCP server events, once the server implements the event methods and signed webhooks.
What changed
Gabriel Chua (@gabrielchua), in a demo OpenAI Developers reposted, built a toy flow: he submits an image request through a ChatGPT Site, the Site's MCP server sends an MCP event, and his Dot receives it and generates the image. He says the run took about two minutes end to end (the video is sped up), and suggests the same pattern for bug reports, support requests, and new sales leads.
OpenAI's MCP Events guide documents the mechanism. ChatGPT subscribes to updates from your MCP server, and when a matching update arrives it follows the instructions the user gave for how to respond. MCP Events works in Work chats on ChatGPT web, in desktop Work chats with Cloud selected, and with dots.
Who is affected
People with a Dot who run, or want to build, a Site or plugin with its own MCP server and want the Dot to react when something happens instead of checking on a schedule. Workspace controls for plugins and event-triggered tasks still apply, and Dots are still rolling out gradually to eligible accounts.
What to do now
- Put your MCP server on MCP 2.0 (protocol 2026-07-28), add events to its server/discover capabilities, and implement events/list, events/subscribe, and events/unsubscribe.
- Give each event a stable name, a specific description, and filters such as a form or queue ID, and apply those filters on your server before delivery.
- Store subscriptions persistently, verify the callback with a signed challenge, and send each event as one signed HTTPS POST (Standard Webhooks format) no larger than 256 KiB. Polling and streaming delivery are not supported.
- Rescan the server from the plugin page so the events show up next to your tools. Then tell your Dot what to watch and exactly what to do when an event arrives.
- Treat anything a visitor submits as data, not instructions. OpenAI's guide says to keep instructions out of event payloads, which matters most on a public Site.
- If the Dot's action writes back to the same app, check that it doesn't trigger a new event and start a loop.
What is not confirmed
The requirements and setup steps come from OpenAI's MCP Events documentation. The Site-to-Dot image flow is Gabriel Chua's own demo; DotsFeed has not reproduced it.
