Writing the same Friday status update every week? ChatGPT Enterprise teams can now hand it to a shared Team Task
ChatGPT Enterprise teams can now set up Team Tasks: scheduled or event-triggered jobs owned by a team, run in the cloud on the team's own connections, with results teammates can review and steer. Start with one report you already write by hand.
What changed
On Oct 20, OpenAI Developers announced Team Tasks in ChatGPT: recurring work, like a Friday rundown of what shipped and what's blocked, that a whole team owns instead of one person. Per OpenAI's setup guide, a task can run on a schedule or when an event happens (for example, a new message in a Slack channel). It runs in the cloud using the team's service account and the connections the team owner picked, and teammates can review past runs and edit what the next one covers. Team Tasks draw on workspace credits, and team spending limits are separate from individual limits.
Who is affected
Eligible ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces. A workspace owner has to turn on two permissions first: "Create teams" and "Create and manage team tasks." OpenAI hasn't announced Team Tasks for Plus, Pro, or Business.
What to do now
- Ask your workspace owner to enable the two permissions for the people who will build tasks.
- Create the team in Settings > Teams. Before inviting anyone, know that every member can see all earlier runs and generated files; you can't restrict individual tasks or runs.
- Check which account each connection uses. A shared connection can see data a given member's own account can't.
- Open Scheduled > + New Task, switch on the Team toggle, pick the team, and choose the schedule (check the time zone) or event trigger.
- Write the instructions as a full brief: goal, expected output, success criteria, and guardrails. Team Tasks don't inherit your personal memories, custom instructions, or chat history.
- Hit Run now and check the result under Previous runs before you trust the schedule.
A practical way to start, suggested in replies to the announcement: run the task next to the update you already write by hand for a couple of weeks, and tell it to list anything it couldn't find, so a missing blocker shows up as missing instead of "all clear."
What is not confirmed
- Whether Business workspaces will get Team Tasks; users asked and OpenAI hadn't answered at publish time.
- Whether each run automatically sees what the previous run reported. The docs don't say, so link or paste last week's output if you need week-over-week changes.
- Pausing or deleting a task stops future runs, but OpenAI says not to rely on either to interrupt a run already in progress.
